Because I know bad people. And I know other people, [ like herself but shhhhhhhhh ] who act a certain way because they have to protect themselves. If people are afraid they'll never get around to make a real judgment about character or intelligence or - any of it. There's power in it. When you have no control over anything else you've got to take anything anyway you can get it.
